World of Dinosaurs: Kids is a fantastic educational app to help introduce you children to creatures that existed millions of years ago. It does have a few competitors in the App Store, but most of these are not very good – one app that’s similar, DinoaryHD Free, only provides an index of about 10 dinosaurs – there were a lot more than that in the ancient world.
The vast majority of dinosaur apps within the App Store are simply games or puzzles – they don’t teach children a whole lot about dinosaurs and how they lived their lives. World of Dinosaurs: Kids is a much more comprehensive app with a lot of great tools to help your children learn everything they should know about dinosaurs.
Normally you’ll find some kind of issue in any app – even the most popular ones. How refreshing it was when I sat down to use this app for the first time and discovered I simply couldn’t find a thing wrong with it. Perhaps the only criticism I might have is that it’s a paid app, but for everything you get in this app it’s actually an awesome bargain for $0.99.
This app is full of interactive tools to make learning about dinosaurs easy for your children, and even includes a great introduction that explains step-by-step how the app is used. This app is simply stunning – the illustrations are lifelike, and they include realistic background sounds that make you feel like you’re right there 65 million years ago.
o navigate your way around the app you have a couple of different options: you can tap on the settings menu in the bottom left corner and skip ahead to any section you like, or you can simply tap on the forward or back buttons in the bottom right corner to work your way page by page through the app – the choice is yours.
Each page has an information button and if you tap on that a dialog box opens explaining what you’re seeing in the picture and what time period it’s from. You can either read the dialog box yourself or tap on the audio button at the top of the box to have it read to you.
The feature that really set this app apart is the ability a tap on any dinosaur, in any picture, and listen to the sounds they may have made – when you tap on any dinosaur you’ll also open up a little dialog box which includes the name of the dinosaur, the period it was from, and the length of the dinosaur.
