GuitarRx app review

GuitarRx

Price: Free

GuitarRx by Todd, Michael & James, Inc. is a riff practice app for your iOS device.

Turn your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch into a guitar and create your own riffs with GuitarRx. Even if you don't own a guitar, this app makes it possible for you to learn all the basics right on your mobile device.

The app comes with five practice segments that are preloaded. Every two days for up to two weeks, you will receive five more riff lessons. This will give you plenty to work with and have fun while you do it.

The lessons are meant to be simple to understand and follow. There are half-speed and full-speed real guitar audio, a take-away breakdown after each of the lessons, and accurate tabs. The musical riffs you'll learn are generic so as to avoid paying royalties for commercial songs. However, if you find you'd like to learn how to play your favorite tunes you can purchase a bundle that gives you popular guitar licks and riffs from a number of popular songs.

Some of the riffs you'll be able to get your hands on if you purchase a bundle include Reelin’ in the Years, Black Magic Woman, China Grove, Ramblin’ Man, Brick in the Wall, One of These Nights, Sweet Home Alabama, and of course, Stairway to Heaven. You can scroll through the artist list to pick your favorites.

GuitarRx was updated to Version 1.1 on December 6, 2012. The update fixed a bug that prevented users from getting free lessons.

While this app won't turn you into a professional guitar player anytime soon, I think it’s a  really fun educational app.

For: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad with iOS 4.0 or later
