Shryne app review: a social media archiving app

Reviews

Introduction

The best iPhone apps for Twitter-2021

Our lives these days are directly tied to our social media accounts. We no longer write handwritten letters to our friends and family, which made preserving our personal history so much easier in the past. Today, we like to live in the moment and once the moment’s gone, it’s generally gone forever. Conversations that we considered important are soon forgotten, which is really too bad as these moments often define who we are. The Shryne app was developed as a service that would help us preserve those social media moments so that we can revisit them in the future. This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and IPod Touch.

Building a Shryne

Shryne was introduced to the App Store in 2014 as a social media archiving app that would allow you to save your important moments forever. The developer’s point out that this is particularly important when we switch service providers, or when we leave university or college and no longer use our school’s email account. Instead of having all our correspondence deleted by the services we’re no longer using, you can use this app to archive them and save them for future reference.

The best social networking apps for iPhone and iPad

The app is the brainchild of developers out of Dublin, Ireland, and was initially promoted as a way to archive the relationship history of someone you’ve recently broke up with. Needless to say there was a lot of criticism about this as an unhealthy service that encouraged people not to let go. Since then, they have since distanced themselves from this approach. The developers now emphasize its ability to archive your relationships with family members and friends – not necessarily people you’ve broken up with.

Today, the developers encourage you to use the app as an archive that saves the snapshots of your life. They actually describe it as a personal analytics tool that can help you quantify your social progress over time. That’s a tall order, but an interesting concept nonetheless.

In their mission statement, the developers declare that they “believe everybody’s history is worth preserving.” Essentially what they’re saying is that your social media data can clearly show you how you’ve changed over time and, by being able to look back on it easily, you can use what you’ve learned for insights into how to deal with future situations. Probably, most of us won’t use this app quite that scientifically in our approach to life and relationships. However, we may use it on occasion to help us make a decision a little easier and to view past encounters or issues.

Create Your Social Archives

The Shryne app is without a doubt one of the most unique apps you’ll come across. As far as I know, it has no real direct competitors, although sites such as Facebook do have a sort of an archival function in its basic form. This app actually organizes your archives into easily accessible snapshots and sections and that’s what sets it apart.

The best iPhone apps for hookups

While this app is free, your archiving capability is considerably limited in the free version. They only provide you with 250 MB of storage, which isn’t a lot to store all of your social media information over an extended period. If you want greater storage capacity then you have to sign up for a yearly subscription which starts at $9.99 and goes up to $19.99. This may seem like a pretty steep price to pay, but it depends on how important archiving your social memories are to you. This app will require 16.8 MB of available space on your iOS device.

Shryne’s Nuts and Bolts

You have to sign up for the app before you can begin using it, but it’s a pretty simple process that just requires entering your email address and creating a password. Once you’re signed up, you can get started using the app immediately.

One thing I really liked about this app was their unique approach to teaching you how to use it. Each different section whether it be email archives, Facebook archives, or text archives, automatically includes a sample of someone else’s stored file (I’m assuming they’re made up people). You can use this to see how the app works and what type of information you can store in it. Once you add your own archive, it automatically deletes the sample and replaces it with yours.

Adding your own archive is simple, you just tap on the new archive tab on the bottom menu and enter the name of the person you’d like to create an archive for. Then you will have to provide the app with permissions to access your various social media profiles for storing your interactions with that person. Your options include email, Facebook, Instagram, your existing camera roll, and your text messages. All you have to do is tap on the social media site you’d like to connect with and allow the app access – it does the rest.

Once you’ve stored data in the app, you can access it by tapping on the library tab on the bottom menu. Each person you’ve added as an archive will have their own picture tab in your main feed that you can tap on to view messages and conversations you’ve had with them. This information is available as long as you want it to be.

The one other feature that really contributes to the richness of this app is the Insights tab. Here you’ll find stored statistics about each person in your archive and how many archives you have based on the type of relationship. There is even a social timeline which highlights who you’ve had the most interaction with month by month. It’s a pretty cool feature.

A Game Changer

Shryne is an app that has the potential to change how we connect with social media. Until now, social media has always been viewed as a way to keep up with friends and family and not to make past conversations easily accessible. With this app, we will always be able to keep track of important conversations and revisit them whenever we like. It’s a game changer!
