pin!Down app app review: keep tabs on your favorite places

Reviews

Introduction

pin!Down by Robinson Optimization Limited is a travel journal app that lets you keep track of your favorite places, people, and even keep track of your reminders.

This iPhone app for pinning your favorite places keeps your Reminders, Contacts, and Photos in one place. It’s kind of like a virtual scrapbooking app that lets you document the stuff you’ve done (where, and with whom) and then share it with your friends.

What It's All About

If you’re a social butterfly, love to document where you’ve been and what you’ve done (and who else was there), then you will probably enjoy this app. It’s kind of a blend of Foursquare and Facebook Mobile combined, except that you’re the one to create the locations.

This means that you don’t have to rely on the labels that other people have made for those locations. Of course, this makes more work for you, but if you like that kind of thing, it’s not too bad.

The map you’ll see is interactive and you can toggle back and forth between map view and satellite view. You’ll be able to view nearby pins and tap them to get access to the details each pin carries.

The app, of course, offers social integration. If you’d prefer not to share via Twitter or Facebook, don’t give the app approval and then go into the Settings and turn off Twitter and Facebook.

What It

Using It

It’s really easy to use pin!Down. Just tap the pin icon and enter your location name and some other details. If you want the pin elsewhere than your current location, enter in the address. If not, leave those fields empty and the app will automatically put the pin on your current location. Once you’ve created a tag, you can add photos.

The app has two main tabs: Map and My Locations. If you click on My Locations you’ll see a list of all of your locations. You can edit from here or share to a message, email, Facebook, or Twitter. You can also be taken to the Maps app for directions to or from there.

Final Verdict

I’m not sure I see the point of this app. Sure, it puts your contacts and reminders and a map all within one app, but the way iOS devices are set up is to make toggling among apps super easy and fast.

Unless you’re new to a city and want to remember where you had that great cup of coffee or met someone, or are on vacation and need reminders, I just don’t see how this would be useful. It’s just as easy to use Google Maps (or the Maps app) to get directions, and might even take fewer steps.

On the other hand, people with super-active social lives, students, and other social butterflies might like the app. It works fine, and does what it says it’s supposed to do, so that’s good. The nice thing is that you can add different and multiple photos to your contacts instead of having one little photo, like building a scrapbook with your contacts.
