Sonic Jump app review: higher and higher!

Reviews

Introduction

Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most recognized game characters of the world. Everybody knows and loves this blue, super fast hero ever since his first appearance in the early 90's. Sonic's special trademark is his blazing speed and most of his games revolve around this aspect. However, the developer has strangely taken a step away from this proven concept, looked at other popular games on the App store and shamelessly stuck our speedy scofflaw into an endless jumping game. And made it the best one out there.

Up, Up and Away!

The concept is simple. Sonic jumps automatically and you tilt your device in a way to guide him from platform to platform, defeating enemies, evading spikes and collecting the signature rings. When you reach the top, the level ends and you get a rating from D to S. Getting an S ranking is quite a challenge, but this definitely makes you come back and try the levels again.

Story mode has four stages (at the time of writing) and each stage has eight levels and a Boss Battle. Here you jump higher and higher and try to defeat the evil Dr. Eggman (Robotnik for die-hard fans) who has presumably done something evil to the animals in the world again.

Challenge your friends

In addition to a comprehensive story mode, Sonic Jump also features an endless Arcade mode, where you can challenge your friends to get higher scores in this endless level. With this, and in story mode, you collect rings that you can use to buy new characters from the Sonic universe, different power-ups that will make the game easier and multiple wallpapers. Extra rings can be bought for a few dollars to speed up the unlocking process or can be earned doing various challenges.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • It’s Sonic!
  • Loads of content for only $0.99
  • Very polished
  • Leaderboard

Cons

  • Sonic is supposed to be fast

Best slow Sonic game ever?

This is probably the best endless jumping game I’ve played, and certainly one of the most addicting. The bosses break up gameplay nicely and there’s always more to do. Sonic Jump is optimized for both iPhone and iPad and is a very safe investment to make. It’s fun for the entire family, as it’s an easy concept and quick to learn.
