London Tube Map app review: your guide to the maze that is the London Underground 2021

Reviews

Introduction

London Tube Map is an iPhone London app by Bappz that includes the whole map of the London Underground. This London app also features a live service status overview of all lines, and offers several other features.

Having lived in London for over six years, I have had my fair share of mishaps using the London Underground. I now wish I had this top London app for iPhone. Keep reading our London Tube Map app review for more details.

Simply a map

The free London Tube Map installed automatically on this app is simple. There are no bells and whistles, and the only function it sports is a pinch zoom feature, which any map should have anyway.

If you have a PDF of the tube map on your device, which you can get for free from the Transport for London website, you would have exactly the same functions without downloading this 20MB app.

The live service status updates are very basic as well. It shows you if a line has delays, and the severity of these delays, but it won’t tell you where the delays are taking place.

Some of the lines in London have multiple routes, so it would have been handy to know if there is a delay on your route, while it just tells you a line has a delay. It does give you an opportunity to look ahead to the weekend to find out if any lines are closed then, so you can plan your journey in advance.

Different Maps

This is where the app stands out for me. Getting maps for other train lines in the United Kingdom can be quite hard, but this app offers you a lot of them for a small price per map.

If you travel by train a lot, it is definitely worth investing in these maps. If you have bought these maps before, there is a handy restore button that allows you to recover previous purchases.

Within the app there are not many ads, but the only one visible is a rather annoying one in the top left corner. If you want to see which station is on that part of the map, it makes you zoom in all the way and scroll to the side, as the ad is covering a part of the map.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Train maps from all over the country
  • Weekend service status updates

Cons

  • Live status updates aren’t very detailed
  • The little ad in the top left hand corner is annoying
  • Basically a PDF of the tube map

Conclusion

If you travel a lot by rail in the United Kingdom, this app can get you most of the maps you need to get around. Getting this app for the tube map alone is a bit useless, as you might as well download the PDF from the official Transport for London website. The app is designed for both iPad and iPhone.
