'Evertales' Is A Tale For Another Day

Reviews

Evertales by Crescent Moon Games is a parody fantasy 2D side scroller game for iPhone and iPad. The game offers three unusual heroes: Sir Jorgin, Arawick and Taragon. Each character has different powers and upgradable weapons the player can utilize in game by switching characters. The adventures themselves are “not-so-epic” starting with a bar brawl with dwarfs evolving to facing off with the dark lord of darkness. While comedy and beautiful visuals are bountiful, the game mechanics create problems players will notice within the first two levels. The storyline plays out in 12 chapters with the narration providing some solid humor to match the setting of the game. There is no penalty from dying in the game other than restarting the level and pulsing hearts (not the cute valentine ones) can be found in barrels or crates. Each character is customizable through coin collection enabling upgrades to different weapons and armor.

Every hero represents a fantasy stereotype: Sir Jorgin is the muscle melee type, Arawick is the ranged attacker and can double jump while Taragon deals out medium range attacks with magic and floats gently downwards when he jumps. While Sir Jorgin is the melee fighter he gets dealt damage quickly due to close range combat making him obsolete. A player can get enough coins to improve Sir Jorgin’s armor, however unless she or he likes playing as a melee fighter the investment isn’t worth it. A player can clear a chapter with just Arawick and Taragon with minimal upgrades. Boss Battles fall into the trap of dodge, attack and repeat. Control wise there are two options: finger swiping or using action buttons. I found the finger swiping method to be a bit difficult due to touch sensitivity thus my reaction time was off. Switching to action buttons is better but there is a slight delay in reaction time.

The big attention getter is the visuals and comedy, aspects where the game excels. The visuals are stunning in lighting and in the details. The chapter maps really capture the atmosphere of the story. Comedy is in every part of the game from the title to the health points in visceral image of beating hearts. The heroes themselves will occasionally say funny character type tropes poking fun at the genre. Evertales is a humorous, beautiful, but mismanaged game with more attention needing to be paid on the control's sensitivity. If you want a game with similar fighting flexibility with different combat types try Frozenbyte’s Trine on PC or Playstation. Or cross your fingers and hope the company makes a Trine app for iOS.
