French in a Month app review: study French and speak it in a month

Reviews

Introduction

If you’ve always wanted to learn French, but never had the time or opportunity to do so, French in a Month by Elky Entertainment, LLC might be exactly what you have been looking for. They say the best way to learn a language is to learn it as a child would do. This app uses a unique study method, making you link what you hear to what you see and learn the meaning of each word or phrase whilst comparing the differences between actions and things.

As with most French language apps for iPad and iPhone, in the free version you will get only a glimpse of what the full app has to offer in terms of content, but more about that later.

How Does It Work?

The lesson starts by showing you photos and repeating the word or activity twice. This is done once for every six photos. After this you will be tested, where the voice will read out what you’ve just learned and you will have to pick the right photo. The thing I really missed is that you never get to see what the actual French means in English, save for the photo. This can be particularly annoying when you make a mistake, as some words (such as girl or woman) are easily mixed up without any explanation. Each lesson will get more and more difficult as you progress, combining the different words you’ve learned and using them in sentences. You will be surprised how quick you actually learn the meaning of sentences and words, even though you never learn the exact meaning.

Free vs. Full Version

In the free version, you will have access to three different lessons. Lesson one is very easy, and gives a great idea of what to expect. The second free lesson is lesson 15, which is already a lot more advanced. Lesson 30 is the last lesson you get for free, which is also the most advanced. Each lesson takes about 10 minutes to complete and holds 60 different words or sentences. In the full version, you will have access to 30 different lessons. This version costs $3.99. If you already speak a bit of French, or just need to brush up, make sure you try out lesson 30, the last one, first, as this one will be the most difficult one of the full app.

Conclusion

I think the method used here is very effective. You will pick up French in a playful matter, and you will learn to understand French without too much effort. Speaking French is a different ballgame though, as you will need to learn different pronunciations and know the meaning of the words you use, which this app doesn’t really teach you. The app is only compatible with iPad and takes up just over 16 MB of space.
