Keeping in contact with other people is one of the fundamental things that human beings need. The fact that people have put so much time and effort into perfecting the many different forms of communication speaks to just how much people need to keep in contact with one another. Of course, modern technology is no exception to the need to fulfill this requirement. There are more ways to connect than there have ever been before.
In a perfect world, you'd be so close to all of your friends and family that connecting with them would be as simple as walking a few hundred yards to their place, strolling into their front door and saying hi to them. But then, since the world we live in isn't perfect, everyone has to make do with using technology to communicate with one another.

The Maintenance of Email

Believe it or not, there was actually a time when email was a great way to communicate with people. Before instant messaging was practical, email bridged the gap between the informality of phone calls, as well as their tendency to interrupt whatever the other person was doing, and the rigidity and long time frames that tend to come with sending someone a letter. While this had partially gone away with the advent of the telegram, sending an email has always been either free or with a very low cost. For those of us who aren't Secretary of State, an email works far better than a telegram.
Granted, these days, emails are generally just advertising tools to blast out whatever "deal" is happening right now. However, in its heyday, email was a great way to communicate with someone who was anywhere in the world, and it allowed you to carefully craft your message without having to think on the spot the way phone calls and text messages do. This is why email remains a meaningful way to communicate despite how much it has changed over the years.

Short-Range Communication Devices

It's important to remember that cell phones are still a relatively new technology, and they have gotten incredibly complex for basically just being an extension of being a two-way radio. The types of radio waves, such as their frequencies, can vary tremendously and allow for private communications between two parties. However, the underlying theory behind what makes a portable communication device work properly hasn't changed in more than a hundred years. If you've ever listened to the radio, you basically understand the principle behind all of these devices.
At its heart, a cell phone is a lot like a walkie talkie, only requiring more infrastructure and power. When you want to talk to someone less than a mile away, often, a simple walkie talkie setup can be your best bet. When you're searching for the best walkie talkie, there are plenty of factors to consider, with the most important being how complex of a device you want it to be.
