Why apps aren’t marketed as “Free” on iTunes anymore

Apple is no longer markets apps as being free in the App Store, because of pressure from the European Union and its position on in-app purchases. That means that the apps that cost nothing to download aren’t labeled as “free” anymore: now, when someone goes to an app page they see a “Get” button, which allows them to download if for free to their device.

There was no big hoopla made over it, and there was no public explanation. Most people think that the pressure from the European Commission is what is forcing the re-labeling. The main concern of the EC is where kids rack up huge bills with in-app purchases via “free” apps that have costs associated with playing.
