Introduction
There aren’t many people in the world who have never heard of Super Mario. It's about time someone made a similar game on iOS. With the WORLD 1 – 1 app, developer Headlight Software, Inc. has done its very best to deliver such a fun app, while also adapting it to current times of Internet connectivity and free-to-play gaming.
Even though the game doesn’t play exactly as you would expect from such a platform game, the similarities with the world’s most famous plumber are abundant and really hard to miss. Is this super mario style app a bad rip off, or a good clone? Let’s find out if this endless runner app is worth a download.
Levels, Controls and Gameplay
The biggest unexpected feature shows up instantly when you boot up the game. There is no structure to the game as other platform games have. Each and every day, the game generates a new level for you to play through.
This keeps the game fresh every day, just like the pizzas the main character is supposed to deliver. In the bottom of the screen, there is a small joystick and a jump button. This is all you need.
Another big difference is that the character runs automatically, and you can only speed him up or slow him down using that small joystick. You need to avoid enemies, all kinds of traps and pits, and collect as many pizza slices as you can. Your goal is to deliver pizzas in time as well as finishing the level.
Power-Ups and In-App Purchases
Throughout your progress through World 1 – 1 (a name given to Earth by the alien invaders) you will also find full pizzas, which will give you a temporary power-up such as shields, slicers, a jet pack, and a helicopter.
These only work temporarily, but in the shop section of the game you can use the money that you’ve made by playing the game to upgrade the length of these power-ups.
You can also spend real world money on certain items, such as new characters to play with and Alien Apocalypse, which is an extra-hard mode, with a darker setting and different music. You can unlock these by spending the in-game currency, or unlock everything in one go for only $0.99.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- A new level to play every day
- Retro gameplay
- Not forced to spend money
Cons
- Awkward controls
- Only one level every day
Conclusion
If you feel like you can’t live life without playing a platform game every once in a while, you should definitely try out WORLD 1 – 1. The game features gameplay that is reminiscent of games from yonder years but still isn’t as good as these classics.
Seeing you can get some of these classics in the App Store as well, you should just pass this one by, but as WORLD 1 – 1 features a new level every day, it will never get boring replaying the game. With compatibility for both iPhone and iPad, this game is worth a try.
