The indie app that promises to save your sanity
My phone was basically unusable. Twenty-three spam calls yesterday alone. "Your car's extended warranty." "This is the IRS." Even one in Chinese that I couldn't understand but knew was spam from the robot voice. Downloaded Robot Call Blocker after seeing it had 4,700 reviews averaging 4.3 stars.
Murphy Brantley, the solo developer behind this thing, claims it blocks over 700,000 spam numbers. Sounds impressive until you realize spammers generate new numbers faster than my kid goes through goldfish crackers. But whatever, I was desperate.
A month of blocking (sort of)
First week felt like magic. Phone went from constant buzzing to... mostly quiet. The app caught about 80% of the garbage calls. That neighbor spoofing feature where it blocks numbers with your same first six digits? Genius. My area code is basically spam central, so this alone cut calls in half.
But then week two happened. Started getting breakthrough calls. Same "warranty" scammers, just from slightly different numbers. The app's supposed to update its blocklist weekly, but I'm not convinced. Checked the App Store - last real update was six months ago. Not great for something that needs constant updating to stay effective.
Week three I discovered the text blocking feature actually works better than the call blocking. Killed about 95% of those "You've won a free iPhone" texts. The Safari ad blocker is... there? Didn't notice much difference honestly, but I already use other blockers.
By week four, I'd settled into a routine. Open the app every few days to manually add breakthrough numbers to the blocklist. Not ideal, but better than nothing. The app crashed twice during this period - once while trying to update the blocklist, once for no apparent reason. Each time I had to re-enable it in Settings which is annoying.
Here's what kills me: there's zero transparency about pricing until you're deep in the free trial. Turns out it's $4.99/month or $39.99/year after your trial ends. For an app that hasn't been meaningfully updated in half a year? Come on.
What the 4,700 reviewers are saying
The App Store reviews tell an interesting story. Most five-star reviews are from 2019-2020 when the app was apparently getting regular updates. Recent reviews are brutal. One guy claims spam calls actually increased after installing it (probably coincidence, but still). Another says the app just duplicates iPhone's built-in blocking features.
Found zero mentions of this app on Reddit's r/ios or r/iPhone. That's... weird. Every other spam blocker has threads discussing it. Murphy Brantley has no social media presence, no support forum, just an email address that may or may not work. The indie.watch newsletter featured him once, where he admitted only 54% of users even make it past the setup screen. He fixed that apparently, but what else is broken?
Twitter search for Robot Call Blocker returns mostly people asking "does this actually work?" Nobody answers.
MacRumors forums don't mention it. Apple support communities don't mention it. It's like this app exists in a weird vacuum where 4,700 people downloaded it and then never talked about it online.

The community verdict (what little exists)
AppGrooves has some revealing reviews. "It hasn't caught any of the spam calls coming to my phone," says one user. "All it does is block the numbers you tell it to block, which I could do myself."
The few blog mentions I found were clearly paid placements from 2019. Current user reviews paint a different picture. Average rating has dropped from 4.6 to 4.3 in the last year. That's not a good trend.
Most telling: competitor apps have thousands of Reddit discussions. Robot Call Blocker has essentially none. When people don't even complain about your app online, that's somehow worse than bad reviews.
My honest take
Robot Call Blocker feels like abandonware that's still charging premium prices. It probably worked great in 2019 when Murphy Brantley was actively developing it. Now? It's coasting on an outdated database while Robokiller and others lap it technologically.
The neighbor spoofing feature remains genuinely useful - I'll give it that. And if you're drowning in spam texts, the SMS blocking works well enough to maybe justify a month or two subscription.
But paying $60/year for an app that hasn't been updated since spring? That's tough to swallow. Especially when Nomorobo costs $24/year and actually gets updates. Or when Truecaller's free tier probably blocks more calls than this.
Would I recommend it? Only if you've tried everything else and specifically need that neighbor spoofing feature. Otherwise, save your money. Your iPhone's built-in "Silence Unknown Callers" feature is free and probably just as effective.
Murphy, if you're reading this (doubt it), either update your app or make it free. Charging premium prices for abandoned software isn't cool.
