While it’s free to download the first month, it does cost $1.99 per month after that, or you can buy a 12 month subscription for $11.99, which saves you 50%. There are additional optional in-app purchases like the Guitar Skills Issue 1 and 2, which are $0.99 and $1.99. As opposed to traditional-style tablature magazines which provide just a small sample of tracks, with this news app you get a wider variety with actual videos to watch up close to see exactly where your fingers should be positioned, which is a great way to tutor a beginner. Reviews so far are few, as this app was only released a few months back, but by the screenshots pictured on iTunes, magazine style apps for the iPad most definitely provide a touch of class whatever the topic. Tutorials consist of finger picking, acoustic, and lead guitar playing, from beginner level to pro, and again, all with videos embedded so you can see and hear how it should sound, which is something traditional magazines clearly lack. The layout is put together well, with clear tabs and video guides that you can pinch to zoom in on. The free app consists of over 40 free videos, and focuses more on the picking technique of blues tracks, but it also provides a number of tutorials like how best to string and tune your guitar. If you are just beginning to learn the guitar and you can get your hands on an iPad, it’s definitely worth the free download to initially test out Guitar Skills Magazine by Coetzee Publishing.
