The Figures app review: addictive puzzle fun
Introduction
If you’re into puzzle games then The Figures is a keeper. It’s simple, it’s addictive, and it’s fun. There are quite a few different game options so you can mix it up – trust me you won’t get bored with this one. You can play it on your lunch break as a great little getaway from the daily grind. It’s a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and the iPod Touch.

Speed Matching
Puzzle and matching games are very popular in the app store – it seems like there’s a new one being released every other day. We’re all familiar with games like Bejeweled and Tetris – The Figures is certainly in the same class with these great classics. For a puzzle game to be addictive it needs to be simple to understand but progressively more difficult so that it keeps the interest of the user. If this is the benchmark by which such games are measured, then this one is an unqualified success.

There were a couple of issues I came across that prevent me from giving The Figures a perfect rating. First of all you’re going to have to put up with pop up ads after every game with this one, but they are easily closed by tapping on the x in the corner so it’s not a major concern. The other thing that bothered me was the total lack of instructions on how to play the game. It’s not difficult to figure out but it’s always a good idea to include some kind of user instruction. This app won’t take up a lot of space on your IOS device – it only requires 2 MB.
How to Play
There are four different play modes in this app: classic, clock, pro, and fast. The great thing about them is that each brings a slightly different twist to the game play which isn’t always the case in these types of games. Essentially it’s four games in one.

Classic game play is probably the best place to start to get a feel for the game. There are four different geometric shapes in the game: circles, squares, stars, and triangles. In the middle of the screen is one of these shapes and a new shape rises from the bottom of the screen as the game begins. The objective is to tap on the rising shape until it changes to match the shape in the middle of the screen. If you can find the right shape before it crosses the shape in the middle of the screen you score a point. It sounds pretty easy but the pace gets faster with each successful point.
The other games are variations on the same theme. The clock gives you a set amount of time to complete the game and the pace is pretty fast, in the pro mode you have to use both hands to match shapes on either side of the screen, and the fast mode is – well, fast. Each game brings a new type of challenge.
