The problem with free cycling apps

Every cycling app wants your money now. Strava jacked their prices to $15/month. Komoot charges for offline maps. Even basic speedometers have "premium" features. So when Map My Ride claims their free version tracks everything you need, I was skeptical.

Three months and 847 miles later? They're technically right. But man, do they make you suffer for it.

My quick test turned into a commitment

Downloaded it for a weekend ride thinking I'd delete it Monday. The setup took maybe two minutes - way faster than Strava's endless questionnaire about your fitness goals. Hit record, stuffed phone in jersey pocket, rode.

First surprise: it didn't crash. My old Cyclemeter app would freeze every third ride. Map My Ride just... worked. Tracked my 23-mile loop perfectly, even through the dead zone near the reservoir where I usually lose GPS.

But then I tried to check my stats on the website. Holy ads, Batman. Banner ads, pop-ups, auto-playing videos. It's like browsing the internet in 2005. The free version is basically punishment for not paying.

The pros and cons

Pros

  • Tracks 600+ activities (even "dog walking")

  • Battery usage surprisingly decent (4-5% per hour)

  • Route planning tool genuinely excellent

  • Syncs with everything (Garmin, Apple Watch, MyFitnessPal)

  • 227,000 reviews averaging 4.8 stars

Cons

  • Website barely functions under ad weight

  • App randomly stops tracking mid-ride

  • Lost two century rides to sync failures

  • MVP subscription barely adds anything useful

  • Under Armour basically abandoned it for Outside+

What Reddit won't stop arguing about

Found a 300-comment thread on r/cycling titled "MapMyRide vs Strava" that basically summarizes to: use Strava for tracking, MapMyRide for route planning, abandon both for Garmin.

The BikeForums crowd is more brutal. "MMR is for people who ride with gel seat covers" got 47 upvotes. Ouch.

But here's what nobody mentions: Map My Ride's point system rewards consistency over speed. You don't have to be fast to top the leaderboards - just show up every day. That's... actually kind of nice? Strava makes me feel slow. Map My Ride makes me feel dedicated.

Bottom line after 847 miles

Map My Ride is the Honda Civic of cycling apps. Not sexy, not fast, but it'll get you there. The free version works if you can tolerate aggressive advertising. The MVP subscription removes ads but doesn't add enough to justify $72/year.

Use it for route planning (seriously, best free tool available). Track with something else. Or get a Garmin and skip the phone drama entirely.

Under Armour's recent handoff to Outside+ feels like admitting defeat. They're adding Outside+ subscriptions to MVP members as a "bonus" - translation: please don't cancel while we figure out what to do with this app.

Still using it? Yeah, for routes. Tracking? Moved to Strava when my friend gifted me a subscription. No regrets except the $180/year price tag.

I use this app to log all my bike rides, walks and runs. I like the summary during my activity and when I finish. Highly recommend!

The main feature I’m looking for in this app is the ability to connect to more devices. For example, I have a Garmin radar. Many bikers are using it as it can be an essential tool and keeping you safe on the road, but it’s not compatible with MapMyRide.
