Claude by Anthropic Review - The AI That Actually Gets You (Most of the Time)
Okay, I'll be honest. When Claude first launched, I thought "great, another ChatGPT wannabe." Boy, was I wrong. After using Claude daily for the past three months (yes, I'm one of those people who talks to AI more than humans), I've got thoughts. Lots of them.
Claude by Anthropic is marketed as the AI assistant that "thinks alongside you, not for you." Nice tagline. But does it actually deliver? Well... it's complicated. Let me break down what I've learned after hundreds of conversations, several rage quits, and one accidental 3 AM existential crisis with an AI.
What Claude Really Is
Claude is an AI chatbot created by Anthropic, a company founded by ex-OpenAI folks who apparently thought "we can do this better." They built Claude using something called Constitutional AI, which basically means they tried to make it helpful without being harmful. Think of it as ChatGPT's more careful, slightly anxious cousin who double-checks everything before speaking.
The app launched on iOS in May 2024, followed by Android and desktop versions. It uses multiple AI models including Claude Opus 4 and Sonnet 4, with the latest models delivering what Anthropic calls "extended thinking" capabilities. Translation: the AI can actually ponder complex problems instead of just spitting out the first thing that comes to mind.
The Good Stuff That Actually Matters
First things first - Claude is genuinely impressive at understanding context. Yesterday I uploaded a 50-page contract (don't ask), and Claude not only read the whole thing but caught inconsistencies I'd missed after three coffees. One user mentioned they find Claude "a lot more coherent and consistently able to follow a fairly long back and forth prompt exchange" compared to its rivals. I'd agree.
The writing assistance is where Claude really shines. Unlike other AIs that make everything sound like a corporate memo, Claude actually adapts to your voice. I tested this by asking it to help with emails in different styles - from professional to "passive-aggressively telling my neighbor their music sucks" - and it nailed each tone perfectly.
Another huge win? The image analysis actually works. I took a photo of my messy whiteboard with barely legible handwriting (even I can't read it sometimes), and Claude transcribed it perfectly AND organized it into a proper outline. Magic? Probably. Useful? Absolutely.
The iOS app syncs seamlessly with the web version. Start a conversation on your phone during lunch, continue on desktop when you get back. No lost context, no repeating yourself. It's such a basic feature but you'd be surprised how many apps mess this up.
The Not-So-Great Parts
Here's where things get messy. And boy, do they get messy.
Usage limits. Oh, the usage limits. Even Pro users paying $20/month hit walls constantly. Multiple reviewers report that "usage limits are often reached too quickly, even with simple tasks." I'm on the Pro plan and sometimes hit my limit after just five substantial conversations. For $20 a month? Come on.
But wait, it gets worse. Remember Claude Code, their fancy coding assistant? Users on the $200/month Max plan (yes, TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS) reported that it "bricked" their systems due to buggy auto-update commands. Imagine paying premium prices for an AI that literally breaks your computer. Not exactly the "helpful assistant" vibe they were going for.
The recent drama around usage limits has been... something. Anthropic quietly tightened restrictions in July 2025 without telling anyone. Heavy users suddenly found themselves locked out mid-session with no explanation. One developer said "there is no way in the 30 minutes of a few requests I have hit the 900 messages." The lack of transparency is honestly insulting to paying customers.
Server issues are another pain point. The status page shows Claude 4 experiencing "elevated errors" practically every other day. During my testing, I encountered the dreaded "Claude is at capacity" message at least twice a week. Always at the worst possible moment too - like when trying to finish urgent work.
Pricing That Makes You Go "Hmm..."
Let's talk money because this is where things get interesting (and by interesting, I mean confusing).
- Free Plan: Exists, but good luck doing anything substantial
- Pro Plan: $20/month (or $18 if you pay annually)
- Team Plan: $30/month per user (minimum 5 users)
- Max Plan: Two tiers at $100 and $200/month
- Enterprise: Custom pricing (translation: if you have to ask, you can't afford it)
The Pro plan gives you "5x more usage" than free, but nobody actually knows what that means in real numbers. It's like saying "you get more cookies" without specifying if it's 5 cookies or 50. The Team plan requires minimum 5 users, so that's $150/month just to start. And the Enterprise plan? Some users report it's $60 per seat with a 70-user minimum. That's over $50,000 annually. Yikes.
The Competition Comparison Nobody Asked For
ChatGPT Plus costs the same $20/month but feels more reliable. When ChatGPT hits capacity, it usually recovers quickly. Claude? Sometimes it's down for hours. One frustrated user perfectly summed it up: "At first, it was awesome. Claude code was performing in god mode. But for the past two weeks, it's been very, very bad."
Google's Gemini and Microsoft's Copilot are cheaper alternatives that work fine for basic tasks. But Claude does have an edge in nuanced conversation and document analysis. It's like comparing a Swiss Army knife to a really good regular knife - Claude has more features, but sometimes you just need something that reliably cuts.
The Pros and Cons Breakdown
Pros
Exceptional at understanding context and maintaining conversation flow
Image and PDF analysis that actually works (when servers aren't dying)
Better at avoiding hallucinations than most competitors
Cross-platform sync that doesn't make you want to throw your phone
Writing assistance that doesn't sound like a robot having an identity crisis
Cons
Usage limits that'll make you question your life choices
Server reliability issues that pop up at the worst times
Zero transparency about actual usage caps or changes
Claude Code potentially breaking your system (seriously, how?)
Pricing tiers that feel designed by someone who hates clarity
Who Should Actually Use Claude
After extensive testing (and some mild frustration), here's my take on who'd benefit from Claude.
Perfect match if you're someone who
- Needs sophisticated writing help beyond basic grammar checking
- Works with complex documents requiring deep analysis
- Values thoughtful responses over speed
- Has patience for occasional server hiccups
- Can afford the Pro plan without crying
Run for the hills if you
- Need 24/7 reliable access for critical work
- Expect unlimited usage at any price tier
- Do heavy coding (seriously, try something else)
- Get frustrated easily with service interruptions
- Think $20/month should mean "unlimited everything"
The Mobile Experience Nobody Talks About
The iOS app deserves its own section because it's genuinely good when it works. Voice dictation is smooth, photo upload for analysis is instant, and the interface doesn't feel like a rushed web wrapper. Android users get the same experience, which is refreshing - usually Android gets the leftover features.
But here's the catch - the mobile app shares the same usage limits as web. So if you hit your cap on desktop, you're locked out on mobile too. Found this out the hard way when trying to show off Claude to a friend. Nothing says "check out this amazing AI" like an error message.
The Verdict That Took Forever to Reach
Claude is brilliant when it works. The problem is that "when" is doing heavy lifting here. It's like dating someone incredibly smart and charming who randomly ghosts you for hours. When they're present, it's amazing. When they're not, you question all your life choices.
For writing, research, and thoughtful analysis, Claude beats ChatGPT hands down. But for reliability, transparency, and value for money? It's got issues. Serious ones.
My rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
It could easily be 4.5 stars if Anthropic fixed the server issues and was honest about usage limits. The core AI is genuinely impressive - probably the best at understanding nuance and context. But the implementation feels half-baked, especially for a service charging premium prices.
Should You Get Claude?
If you need an AI that truly understands complex topics and can engage in sophisticated discussions, Claude is worth trying. The free version gives you enough taste to decide if it's worth upgrading. Just don't expect unlimited access at any price point, and definitely don't rely on it for time-sensitive work.
For casual users, the free tier is actually decent. For professionals, the Pro plan might work if you can deal with hitting limits randomly. For teams and enterprises... honestly, maybe wait until Anthropic figures out what they're doing with pricing and reliability.
The Bottom Line
Claude feels like a glimpse of the future wrapped in the infrastructure of 2015. The AI itself is remarkable - thoughtful, nuanced, genuinely helpful. But it's trapped in a service model that can't keep up with demand and pricing that makes no sense.
My advice? Try the free version. If you love it despite the limitations, upgrade to Pro for a month. Just keep your expectations in check and have a backup plan for when (not if) you hit those usage walls.
And whatever you do, maybe skip Claude Code unless you enjoy living dangerously. Your computer will thank you.
