8bit Knight - Pixel Slayin app review: a terrible attempt to recreate a classic game
Introduction
Sometimes when I play a game on my device I really don’t know what the developer was thinking. Sometimes it feels like absolutely no thought or idea went in to the game and the result is as terrible as it can be. This is even worse when the developer tries to recreate a popular game of old. In the case of 8bit Knight - Pixel Slayin, the developer, Deon du Plessis, tried to mimic a Capcom classic called Ghouls and Ghosts. This is a game well-known for its difficulty and its fantastic gameplay. In this game, free to download for both iPad and iPhone, it feels like the developer only took one page out of the book: the difficulty part.

Gameplay
As mentioned in the introduction, the gameplay for 8bit Knight is absolutely terrible. Basically, there are two things you need to do. The left button on the screen is to jump. You can only jump one specific height, making timing and planning ahead nearly impossible. The second button, on the right side of the screen is for the knight’s attack. You can simply hold the button to keep smacking your sword, but half of the time it will do no good. It seems like it will only kill a specific type of enemy, making it almost impossible to play through the first level. Not only do you need to kill or avoid enemies, you will also need to collect coins and avoid all kinds of terribly placed obstacles in your way.

Graphics and Sound
As the title of the game suggests, this is a game with 8-bit graphics, basically meaning it’s pixelated. It does suit the game very well, but it definitely is not making the game look very good. The sound is pretty annoying as well, as you will get sick of the music after playing for a few minutes. Apparently, if you collect enough coins, a new weapon will be unlocked, which gives the knight more lives and gives you a bigger reach to do more damage. I can’t imagine anyone playing this game that much, and in the reviews in the App Store it read that this function doesn’t even work either.

Conclusion
If you like getting really frustrated and annoyed, I will definitely advise you to download 8bit Knight. Compared to other frustrating games, this game is simply badly designed, and it has nothing to do with the intention of the developer. The gameplay is just abysmal and doesn’t work half the time. This app is available for both iPad and iPhone, but I will suggest not to download it for any device. The app is just over 15 MB, which is already too much for a game like this.
