My month-long EDM journey with Edmtrain

Remember when finding EDM shows meant following every single venue on Instagram and still missing half the good stuff? Yeah, that was me. Three weeks ago, a friend dragged me to a warehouse party I'd never heard about, and when I asked how she found it, she just said "Edmtrain, duh." Downloaded it that night at 2am. Been using it religiously ever since.

First impressions were... overwhelming? The app throws literally everything at you. Shows from tonight, next week, three months out. Tiny underground DJ sets mixed with massive festivals. It's like someone dumped the entire North American EDM calendar on your phone. Took me a solid week to figure out how to filter properly. Pro tip: use the genre filters immediately unless you want dubstep shows mixed with your house music searches.

what actually works after a month

The location tracking is scary good. Within minutes of downloading, it showed me 14 shows happening within 20 miles this weekend. Fourteen! I thought I knew the scene here but apparently not. Found this tiny venue doing techno nights every Thursday that I'd been driving past for two years.

What surprised me most? The community-added events. Thought it would be spam central but it's actually legit. Some promoter added a secret afterparty location last weekend and boom, 200 people showed up. The verification seems decent - haven't been catfished by a fake event yet.

The integration with Spotify is clutch. Tap an artist you don't know, instantly preview their tracks. Discovered like 8 new DJs this way. My Spotify algorithm is probably confused as hell now but whatever.

Here's the thing though - this app hasn't been updated properly in forever. Some buttons still look like they're from iOS 7. The calendar view everyone keeps requesting? Still MIA. And dont get me started on the notification system. It's either dead silent or buzzing every 5 minutes about shows 3 states away.

Pros

  • Covers basically every EDM event in North America

  • Community adds underground shows big apps miss

  • Spotify integration for instant artist previews

  • Free with minimal ads (they're really not annoying)

  • Works offline once events are loaded

Cons

  • Interface feels ancient

  • Notifications are all or nothing

  • No proper calendar view (just endless scrolling)

  • Sometimes shows cancelled events as active

  • Festival info often outdated

  • Android version crashes randomly (iPhone seems fine)

what Reddit and the forums are saying

Went down a rabbit hole on this. The EDM subreddit is surprisingly positive about Edmtrain. Found a thread from last month where people called it "ugly but essential." One guy said he's used it since 2013 and never missed a show since. That's dedication.

The App Store reviews (4.9 stars from 7,000+ people) are almost cult-like. "TRULY THE BEST APP" and "the only app I use to track everything EDM" pop up constantly. People seem to forgive the dated interface because it just works.

But here's what nobody mentions in reviews - the company almost shut down last year. Found this on some obscure EDM blog. They announced they were closing, then mysteriously reversed course. Makes you wonder about long-term viability. Some users on forums worry their data might disappear overnight.

Twitter's interesting. The @edmtrainapp account is active, they actually respond to complaints. Saw them help someone find a lost ticket link last week. That's more than Bandsintown ever did for me.

The community aspect nobody talks about

This is where it gets weird in a good way. The app has this whole subculture thing happening. People add notes to events like "bring gum for the newbies" or "security is chill after midnight." It's like insider trading but for raves.

The guestlist links are hit or miss. Sometimes legit free entry, sometimes just discount codes. Always verify before showing up expecting free entry - learned that the awkward way.

My verdict after a month of daily use

Look, is Edmtrain perfect? Hell no. Is it pretty? Absolutely not. But does it work? Yeah, annoyingly well.

If you're serious about EDM and live in North America, you need this app. Not want - need. I've discovered more good shows in three weeks than I did all last year stalking Instagram. The underground shows alone make it worth the storage space.

But honestly? If Bandsintown added better EDM coverage tomorrow, or if someone made a modern version of this concept, Edmtrain would be dead within months. It survives because it's the only thing that does exactly what it does. The 680k Instagram followers aren't there for the UI.

Still using it daily. Will probably keep using it until something better comes along. Which at this rate might be never. Sometimes ugly but functional wins. Just wish they'd hire a designer from this decade.

Would I recommend it? If you're into EDM, absolutely. If you're just casually interested in concerts, stick with Bandsintown. And if you're one of those people who only goes to Ultra once a year, you definitely don't need this.

One last thing - backup your saved events somewhere else. With their shaky history, I screenshot everything important. Paranoid? Maybe. But I'm not missing Four Tet because an app died overnight.
