An idiom is a phrase or word expression, when used together, means something different from what the words actually say.
Idioms are often used to express that other words do not express as clearly as it should be. People often use an image or symbol to describe something as clearly as possible and thus make our point as effectively as possible. For example, "in a nutshell" suggests the idea of having all the information contained within very few words. Idioms tend to be informal and are best used in spoken rather than written English.
Many people need to learn idioms separately because certain words together or at certain times can have different meanings. In order to understand an idiom, one sometimes needs to know the culture the idiom comes from.
Idioms are generally difficult to use unless we are sure of its meaning. We can use idioms in our routine communication so that we will able to remember its meaning and use it for later use.
