Princess Little One sits in her castle all cosy and safe, reading her book. But what’s out there in the dark?
Wolves that howl in the night.
(It isn’t the wind roaring, like you thought!)
The treacherous dark of the forest.
(Where it isn’t just wolves sneaking with fangs bared, but you can be sure desperadoes and robbers are hiding there, too!)
Spooks and ghosts are about.
Witches with brooms (and without).
Wild boar with sharpened iron tusks and a stag with antlers of fire.
And worst of all: People.
People who want to do bad things.
People who want:
The gold from the treasure chamber.
The sausages from the sausage cellar.
The pastries from the bakehouse.
The money we have so carefully saved and counted and burnished and polished
and collected up and hidden away in the coffers.
All those people who want everything
you have got here, Little One.
But Little One isn’t scared. She goes out to face the dark.
