NPD (a research firm) announced their results from their most recent Connected Home report that showed that while Apple has increased smartphone ownership by seven percent (35 percent to 42 percent), Samsung users had only increased theirs by four percent (22 percent to 26 percent). Evidence of a duopoly is also shown in the report: both Apple and Samsung gained whilst most of the smaller manufacturers (Blackberry, Motorola and HTC) lost a few percent in ownership.
This data comes from roughly 5,000 consumers and follows the same trends that comScore found recently, with Apple having 41.2 percent of the market and Samsung having 26 percent between September and November last year.
Whilst Apple is doing well in the U.S., where the high prices of handsets aren’t much of an issue due to carrier subsidies, we’re still seeing Android dominate other areas like China and Western Europe. Most reports seem to give Apple’s marketshare in Europe and China at around 15 to 20 percent. In some countries like Spain, Apple has almost no marketshare.
