Foxconn to invest $1bn in Indonesia

Foxconn (one of Apple’s main manufacturers) has signed a letter of intent that promises to invest as much as $1 billion in Indonesia. This investment will be spread out between three and five years, covering areas including manufacturing, electronics software design, R&D, and assembly of electronic products. The investments will be focused in Jakarta, one of the better parts of Indonesia for infrastructure.

Foxconn is trying to diversify away from China, after losing a lot of business to Pegatron. The company has announced plans to spend $40 million in manufacturing and research facilities in the U.S. It is currently in over ten countries like Mexico, Brazil, and Vietnam.

Foxconn still has a huge presence in China though, with roughly a million workers, most of whom are in their main facility in Shenzhen. It’s often called “Foxconn City” since the area is a walled campus. It has its own workers' dormitories, a fire brigade, television network, grocery store, bank, restaurants, bookstore, and hospital.
