Google Drive makes its cloud storage more competitive; 1TB for just $9.99/month

In a surprising move, Google has drastically cut the price of its extra storage offerings. You can now get 100GB for just $1.99/month and 1TB for $9.99/month. If you’d rather not pay anything, you can still get their free tier which remains unchanged with 15GB.

This is much cheaper than its main rival, Dropbox. They currently charge $9.99/month for 100GB and $49.99/month for 500GB, five times Google’s price for half the storage. It looks like Google might be charging users at-cost for these storage plans, with the intention of making a profit when data starts to become cheaper. After all, once you’re in a cloud storage service (especially with 100GB of data uploaded to it), it’s a painful and slow process to try and move.

No other cloud storage providers have announced price cuts to try and compete with Google so far, and it’ll be interesting to see if Dropbox starts to reduce their price. Although Dropbox is likely to remain safe, since it’s often regarded to be a better product than Google Drive, even if that comes at a higher price.
