Apple welcomes Beats to the family, closes online store

Apple updated its website with a new page, celebrating the acquisition of Beats Music and Beats Electronics. The page links visitors to the first page of the new Beats Electronic website, which also mentions that the Beats team is joining Apple. Beats Electronic has also confirmed it’ll be shutting the online store. All transactions will now be done on Apple’s Online Store, and customers are advised to contact Apple for purchases made since Friday, August 1.

Bloomberg has reported that Viendi has sold its 13 percent stake in Beats Electronics to Apple this week, for $404 million.

Apple announced earlier in the year it bought Beats Electronics for $3 billion. This is the largest acquisition in Apple’s history, far surpassing the $429 million purchase of NeXT. Apple plans to offer Beats products at resellers and its own retail outlets; however, Apple hasn’t given any further information on how the company will integrate Beats into its product line.

Apple plans to lay off 200 workers from Beats. Currently the company has a workforce of roughly 700. Apple claims the layoffs are to eliminate redundancy.
