One of only 50 Apple 1 computers made in 1976 has been sold at auction for $905,000. Bonhams auction house in New York City said the computer went to Henry Ford organization and at far above the pre-sale estimate of $300,000 to $500,000. The Apple 1 was designed by Steve Wozniak and was made in Steve Jobs’ garage in 1976. The computer still works with its intact motherboard, monitor, and keyboard. The computer was basically a circuit board and not much else, and was sold for $666.66. The same model brought in $671,400 at an auction last year in Germany.
This was Bonhams' first science and technology-related sale. Other items that sold during the same auction include a Helmholtz sound synthesizer from 1905, which is the earliest electrical keyboard, and a letter by Charles Darwin about the sex life of barnacles.
The Henry Ford organization plans to put the computer on display beside its other historic items at the museum in Dearborn, Michigan besides other historic items.
