Apple is using a quarter of the world’s sapphire supply - and wants more

You’ve all heard about how GT Advanced Technologies has ended its contract with Apple and has filed for bankruptcy protection, but have you heard that Apple is already using one-quarter of the world’s supply of sapphire to make the iPhone fingerprint reader and camera lens? That’s a huge amount, just when you think about the iPhones and iPads, but think about when Apple starts making iPhones with sapphire screens and Apple Watches with sapphire displays! Now we all know why Apple needs a company to produce more!

Further to that, the tech giant is now planning to re-purpose the GTAT plant in Mesa, Arizona  to fulfill its production requirements. The company is working with local and state officials to ensure that happens. Apple chose the town because of the location’s perks and economics, and that hasn’t changed just because GTAT is no longer running the factory.
