The Canadian Competition Bureau has made applications to the Federal Court of Canada asking for information from eight different Canadian wireless carriers. The questions involve how they set the prices of service contracts and the prices of smart phones in addition to how many devices the companies had to purchase from Apple. According to a report by the Globe and Mail, the competition watchdog launched its investigation in March of 2014 to determine if Apple and Apple Canada Inc. placed contractual obligations on wireless companies in Canada that led to them inflating device and cell phone service prices.
In court filings, the bureau alleges that the terms instituted surrounding the marketing and sale of iPhones to Canadian customers might discourage carriers from reducing prices, or might increase the price of monthly services in relation to competing devices. So far, there has been no finding showing that Apple did in fact engage in any anti-competitive conduct.
