Android dominates almost 80 percent of smartphone market, iOS just 13 percent

In the latest figures released by research firm IDC, Apple's share of smartphone shipments worldwide has dropped to just 13.2 percent in Q2 2013. Android meanwhile has gone up to 79.3 percent. Android has been more popular than iOS for a while but this is the widest split we've seen. Back in Q2 2012 we saw Apple controlling 16.6 percent of the market, with Android at 69.1 percent.

One of the main reasons for the split between platforms being so large is to do with timing. Apple usually releases a new iPhone between June and September, and consumers have caught on to that now. Most people will hold off buying a new iPhone at the moment (and since April probably) because there aren't many incentives to not just wait until September. Meanwhile we see the two largest Android manufacturers (Samsung and HTC) release their big smartphones of the year, and so their sales are inflated.

This report also shows that BlackBerry OS is losing ground, now at 2.9 percent, while Windows Phone is gaining some market share, reaching 3.7 percent (3.1 percent in Q2 2012).
