Fancy Pants Adventures app review: a solid platformer but far from fancy

Fancy Pants Adventures is a portable version of the online flash game of the same name. It’s a 2D platforming adventure where you control Fancy Pants, the game’s protagonist, as he attempts to rescue his kidnapped sister. The story is a bit silly, but it’s meant to be, and a few parts in the story got legitimate chuckles out of me. The gameplay itself is a mixed bag because for every part of the game I enjoyed, there was something I didn’t. The controls are simple and work well most of the time, but it always feels like you’re running around on ice, as Fancy Pants slides a bit when trying to stop. About halfway through the game you’re given a melee weapon (prior to which your only means of attack was to stomp on enemies' heads) which is completely unnecessary. Using it is awkward and it’s not even that good.

On top of that, the game never seems to know if it wants to be Sonic or Mario. You can move fast and follow parkour-type paths throughout levels that allow you to move through them very quickly. However, in doing so, you’ll be missing out on most of the collectibles and secrets. I often found myself zooming through a section of a level only to have the completionist in me go back and see what I had missed. Speaking of completionists, there is a lot of content in the game. On top of the basic levels, there are the collectibles, secret levels, arcade games, and over one-hundred and forty different outfits that you can use to customize Fancy Pants.

Fancy Pants Adventures is a solid platformer with a ton of content but the controls can sometimes be a bit jarring, and one’s desire to unlock everything is directly related to how much they enjoy the game in the first place.
