The Poynt app for iPhone and iPod touch is the ultimate navigation app for finding what you need in a new city. You can search movies, restaurant, gas prices, events, people, businesses, and offers. For a free app available in India, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Spain, Australia, and Germany, it sure does a lot!

Why I Love It

Poynt is an easy-to-use app that directs you to just about anything you could want to find in town. Want to go to a movie? No problem, you can search by cinema, movie, top 10, or genre. Find a cinema you like and want to remember it easily next time? No problem, just add it to your favorites list! Did you want dinner before that movie? Sure, just go to the restaurants section, search by name, cuisine type, or what’s nearby. Built right into the app is the ability to click-to-call, get directions, view the website, view the hours of operation, their prices, and even reserve a table for some restaurants!

What else can this app do? Check your gas prices if you are in the U.S., UK, or Canada before you go to the closest gas station. Maybe the one around the corner has an even better price!

If you don’t want to catch a movie, check out the events section. It is a little more difficult to navigate, but this is because the developers must always have this portion updated for the many cities that the app encompasses. If you are looking for a music concert, then the app is easy to navigate. If you are looking for a free family event, it can be hit and miss. When we first moved to our current city, I tried to use Poynt to find things to do. It was a bit of a bust, but to be fair, it’s a small city.

 

What Bugs Me

Poynt has a ton of great features. As with any app, there are those that irk me, too. For example, the scrolling of the features is difficult to spin. You are presented with an ellipse-shaped menu from which you have to select your point of interest for the query. Scrolling through the menu can be finicky, but once you get to know the right touch, it isn’t too bad.

The weather app isn’t that reliable, but if you are looking for a general "it’s raining" or "it’s cold" then it’ll do. It does present you with the temperature of -6°C for example, but does not give a "feels like" which is the only temperature I really pay attention to.

• Favorite option for saving your favorite theaters, restaurants, and more
• Weather app within so you can check the weather for the date of the event you’d like to attend
• Look up phone numbers of businesses or people without needing another app and create a favorite list

 

Cons

• Small cities and towns are not that well represented in the events section

 

Final Thoughts

Poynt iPhone and iPod touch app is a great app for navigating a new city, or to find something to do in your current one. I have been using it for four years, and continue to recommend it as a first app to people new to smart phones.
