Thermometer app review: a weather app with limited forecast

Reviews

Introduction

Thermometer by Presselite is an iPhone and iPod touch app that shows the current weather on a thermometer in Celsius or Fahrenheit. It does this on an easy-to-read screen with a thermometer at the top.

Nothing Fancy, But Easy to Read

Thermometer is nothing fancy, but it is easy to read. It easily switches between Celsius and Fahrenheit for those who live in an area where both are necessary to know. I appreciate this because in Windsor, Ontario, we are a border city. While I grew up giving the temperature in Celsius, most of my neighbors use Fahrenheit. When asked the temperature, I can use this app to switch back and forth so that I know what the temperature is in Celsius and can understand, but can also tell my friends so that they can grasp that temperature in Fahrenheit.

You can add your city by search or have it know your location. You can also upgrade to have the full weather forecast, but for my purposes of sharing the temperature with friends and neighbors, it does the trick. It is a simple black screen with the temperature, a general weather description, the wind, and the humidity. There is no ‘feels like’ in the free version, which is the main part I pay attention to.

City Options

Thermometer free version is very limited. You can only have one city, and you can only view the limited information listed above. If I had an idea of what the paid version for $0.99 would provide, than I might be more likely to suggest it is worth it. Other apps hint at features, or provide a screen shot on the iTunes App store. All this one has is the free image, and an iPad screen shot which doesn’t give any more details.

I like the thermometer at the top. It’s a nice feature. Is it worth having another weather app on my phone when I already have two? I don’t think so. I still prefer Celsius - Weather & Temperature on your Home Screen, which has been reviewed on this site if you want more information. I also have one called WeatherEye.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Thermometer is a nice touch
  • Easy to read with big numbers

Cons

  • Limited forecast
  • Limited information in the forecast that is provided
  • Must pay to get the information most free apps provide such as high and low for the day

Final Thoughts

Thermometer is an iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch app that attempts to give an accurate visual guide to the temperature using a thermometer at the top of the screen. While this is a nice touch, the forecast is so limited that I can’t recommend this app for use. Unless you are in love with the layout and willing to take the $0.99 gamble, try out another free version of a weather app before diving in.
