iBirds Lite Guide to Birds app review: an extensive collection of bird information

Reviews

Introduction

I have met a lot of people on my travels and everyone has a different reason to be on the road. One of the groups I often bump into is the bird watchers. They travel all over the world just to get a glimpse of a particular bird. They usually carry around a book of birds, and since there are so many of them, I can imagine it must be quite a struggle to carry it around wherever you go. Luckily for those people, the Mitch Waite Group has released iBirds Lite Guide to Birds for iPhone and iPad in the App Store. This app holds a wealth of information about the birds of North America.

Layout and Design

The app is perfectly designed and has a nice alphabetical list of all the birds you can imagine. You can change the view as well; making it a bit more cluttery, but more birds will be shown on one page. Tapping on any of the birds will pull up a lovely information page with full color pictures and a lot of information about the bird. Currently the app sports the grand total of 938 different bird species, all to be found in the United States and Canada. The app is being fully supported by its developer and constantly has new information and species added.

Free app

The lite version of this app doesn’t sport all the features its paid for brother delivers. For example, the Lite app only gives you access to the information on 60 birds out of the 938 that the paid version offers. All kinds of handy features are blocked too, but as the developer says himself, this app is solely designed to inform you on the features the paid app has to offer. Each of these paid apps will set you back $19.99, but is an amazing reference guide that will make the bird enthusiast very happy. It contains a search function with over 30 different attributes to search from, so if you see a bird you don’t know, you will always be able to find it in seconds!

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Gives you full insight on the features contained in the full apps
  • Great lay out
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • The paid apps are expensive, and split up in different categories

Conclusion

iBirds Lite Guide to Birds is the perfect app if you want to get a bird watching app for the iPad, but you’re just deciding where your money should go towards. The full apps are amazing, but also very pricey, so make sure you try other free bird watching apps as well before committing to a purchase. The layout and design of these apps are outstanding and you, as a true bird watching expert, will have access to all the important information about birds and their behavior. The app is compatible with iPad and iPhone and is just under 87 MB in size.
