Can You Steal It app review: a smart little adventure game

Introduction

When I was looking for an app to review today, I wasn’t really looking for a game for kids. I was looking for something a little more adult, which can be quite a challenge in the App Store. When I stumbled over Can You Steal It by Hi Studio Limited, I thought that no game for kids could have a theme like stealing. However, this game, compatible for iPad and iPhone, puts the player in the boots of a thief who only steals for people who really need help. Can You Steal It might be designed with kids in mind, but even I, as a cynical adult, have to admit that this is a very entertaining and challenging game.

Gameplay

In Can You Steal It you are put in a room. In this room, you can investigate some nooks and crannies to find hints, puzzle pieces, keys, and other objects you might need to find the object that you are looking for. Every stage (there are a total of twelve) has a different objective and the puzzles will get harder and harder as you progress. The items will also be increasingly harder to find, while more obstacles will block your way between you and your much-wanted object. It’s strange that the character says he steals for people who need it, but most of the objects are very materialistic in nature.

Graphics and Art Style

The art style and graphics give away instantly that this game is designed for kids. There is nothing wrong with it, but it will limit the target audience of the app dramatically. I, a 33 year old male, had a lot of fun trying this app out and found some of the later puzzles quite challenging, but not impossible. The graphics of the game are clear enough not to get you stuck at any time, though I would have loved to see some more detail or realism in the graphical style. The art is pretty decent, but nothing that actually jumps out. There isn’t much movement in the environments, as you’re in an abandoned room most of the time.

Conclusion

Can You Steal It is a great little game for people of all ages. The concept is simple to understand, but you will need to use your brain to understand some of the puzzles, which become pretty difficult near the end of the game. This version is free, but you can upgrade to pro for $2.99. The app is compatible with both iPad and iPhone and is around 40 MB. I can recommend this app to both children and adults, as it is challenging without being frustrating, as the puzzles aren't too hard until closer to the end.
