Concept And Design

It is very refreshing to see an entertaining app for children which is not a game with difficulty levels, high scores, and the message of competition and improvement embedded into the structure.

Toca Train features intuitive controls in the form of levers, buttons, and more, which your child can tap and learn from hands-on. There are no written instructions; your child learns through exploring.

Watch as your child drives around in the steam train which whistles, makes sounds and emits smoke & sparks. Driving along on the railroad, you and your baby can decide together what actions you'd like to do.

Where should you drop off the characters? Where would you load the cargo for your next errand? You and your child will enjoy this app just like you would a real toy train set.

The app interface is very clean and free of distractions. The scenery that you see while you're driving the train is really beautiful and colorful. Camera angles for perspective can be changed easily by swiping or pinching the screen, while the speed of the train can be adjusted using the lever.

Out With The Old, In With The New

Gone are the days when little children could own inanimate objects in the form of dolls, action figures, yo-yos, and yes, trains. Children, whether by themselves or with a playdate, would concoct all kinds of tales in their head using their toys.

They had a sense of whimsy and wonder, and made the adults around them wonder when they lost that childlike innocence.

With the rise in technology and digital screens in our faces most of the day, children are no longer stimulated enough by these old toys. They need more.

I have seen a few Toca Boca apps and I love their concept of creating “digital toys” rather than games. There are no rules, high scores, titillating music, or time limits that might stress out little children.

They get to control how they play it, as they would with old school physical toys, all the while having fun in their imaginative world. Parents are encouraged join in and play with the children; perhaps they will learn a thing or two about thinking outside the box.
