NBC Connecticut app review: carry a leading news source in your pocket

Reviews

Introduction

If you are a resident of the state of Connecticut and in the market for a news app to bring you the latest in your state straight to your iPhone or iPad, then NBC Connecticut is worth a shot.

This free news app can be found in the News section of the App Store, and did I mention that it was free? But there will be a price to pay: in the form of ads, which although are present in every screen of the app, you will still find it easy to gloss over them as they are tucked away nicely at the bottom of the screen.

In this app you'll find the latest breaking news, real-time and predicted weather reports, along with traffic reports. All the elements combined will ensure that this app is serving its function of keeping you connected to the events that are unfolding in your city.

Developed by NBC Universal, Inc., it's not a surprise to see the familiar logo which is mounted at the top of the interface, but it is rather surprising to see they didn't use the classic blue theme. This app has a modern look, thanks to a platinum-colored theme, and is a real pleasure to look at.

Furthermore, its body only occupies 8.1 MB of space on your iOS device, which makes it quite agile and swift in action. When you launch this app, you'll be taken to the Top Stories page, which is the default screen. Here you will get a chronologically arranged grid of article thumbnails, each a headline which is updated constantly, with stories appearing as and when they are published. The thumbnail images come with the truncated headlines as well as date and time of publishing.

When you tap on the story you wish to explore, you will be delighted to see the format, which is really easy on the eye and comes with many functions that enable users to share the story, change the font size, add to favorites, and do a lot more within each article.

Other Features

If you receive the be alerted each time there is a new Top Story published on this app, you can enable push notifications to receive alerts. I tried having this option on for one morning and afternoon, after which I was compelled to disable it. The frequency of publishing is too high, which means push notifications can become a bit annoying.

Navigating over to other sections of the app can be done by using the menu button which you will find on the upper left corner of the screen. Other sections include the Weather Forecast, Dog House, Traffic Reports, Videos, and Blogs.

The Videos section is particularly useful if you don't have the time to sift through and read each of the articles provided to you, or if you simply prefer the audio-visual method of delivery over having to read every story.

If you enable the GPS location services, you will also find the real-time as well predicted weather forecast along with real-time traffic reports that will help you have a smooth and pleasant day uninterrupted by meteorological and traffic events.
