KidsDental by ORCA MD is a medical app that uses fun animations to help teach your kids how to properly care for their pearly whites. It’s free for a limited time.

The app is divided into four sections: Explore, Conditions, Learn, and My Teeth.

Explore has your kid doing 360-degree exams of the teeth and jaw, with full zoom. Conditions teaches kids about tooth loss, decay, abscesses, gum disease, and late loss of teeth through animation and interactive activities. The Learn section helps teach your child to floss, practice good brushing and flossing habits, how to brush, and allows him or her to practice brushing. Finally, the My Teeth section lets parents or kids input information about their own teeth like when they lost their teeth, take pictures, and share using email.

In all, children will learn about gum disease, abscessed teeth, cavities, broken teeth, and tooth loss.

KidsDental was updated to Version 1.1 on June 18, 2012. The update made several improvements and changes. The app has a total of 31 customer ratings with an average of four out of five stars.

I think this is a good app, except when I was playing around with it, the “Learn to Floss” screen didn’t offer any floss to use. Hopefully the developers fix this in an update. Edited to add: my daughter played with the app and figured it out: use multi-touch gestures with your thumb and finger on the screen near the teeth and a strand of floss appears. Spread them farther apart to pull it taut, and floss out the debris from the teeth!
