Despite constant improvements in iOS-gaming technology, the system has yet to transform into a full-fledged portable gaming console. Developed by 5th Cell Media, the game is the latest installment from the popular Scribblenauts franchise that first made waves on the Nintendo DS. Immediately following its debut at Nintendo’s E3 Convention in 2009, the original Scribblenauts was met with both critical and consumer praise winning awards for “Most Innovative Title” and “Best Handheld Game”. Needless to say, Scribblenauts Remix had quite a lot to live up to when it was released on iOS at the beginning of October. Remix doesn’t disappoint. As in earlier versions, your goal is to help the rooster-capped Maxwell accomplish tasks by searching for useful items in the games searchable database. There are tens of thousands of items to choose from, providing for endless creativity and experimentation. Need to get across a body of water? Build a bridge, row a boat, or try to man a jetpack—just search for what you need. Once you’ve completed a task, you’ll receive a Starite. The more Starites you collect, the more access you’ll gain to additional content. Along with 10 all-new, iOS-exclusive levels, there are 40 levels taken directly from Scribblenauts and Super Scribblenauts. These levels range from simple locations and tasks (getting a classroom ready for the first day of school) to more complex, hard-to-beat levels. You can also enter the playground, where you can create and build objects without limits or goals. iCloud allows users to pick up where they left off on multiple iOS devices. When it comes to mobile gaming, Scribblenauts continues to appeal to gamers of all ages by encouraging imagination and exploration. It’s also a great game for people who want a quick test of creativity without having to commit to hours of gameplay. Hopefully, Remix is the first of many more Scribblenauts apps to come.
