MetroLyrics app review: easily find the lyrics for all of your favorite songs

Introduction

Developer CBS Interactive has really gone all out with this app, enabling you to search over 700,000 song lyrics as well as being able to automatically find the lyrics to tracks in your Music Library, display the meanings of your favorite songs, and even sync lyrics up to your audio tracks so that you can sing along in true karaoke fashion!

As a big-time music lover and a guitarist and singer, I’ve absolutely fallen in love with this app because it provides a truly comprehensive song lyrics service. From the moment you start up this lyrics app for the first time you’ll immediately be able to see the huge amount of attention that has been paid to every little detail – this app definitely gets my recommendation.

Sing, Sing a Song

The first thing which strikes me upon first using this app is the sheer size of the lyrics database; with more than 700,000 song lyrics to search through, you’re almost sure to find even some of the more obscure titles.

Another very cool feature is that this app includes an integrated music player which will automatically detect the lyrics to the song currently playing and display them onscreen pretty much instantaneously.

If you don’t want to use the in-app player, you can start playing a track from within your normal music player and then use the Song ID tool which then listens to the song to try and identify it. I’ve had mixed success with this so the jury is still out on the efficacy of this feature.

Tour Date Info

Something else I really liked is that MetroLyrics uses Last.fm data to let you know if a band or artist is currently on tour, and from within the app you can take a closer look at upcoming tour dates to see if any of them are in your local town.

You can also check out the Trending section to see which songs are currently the most sought after, with the added option to filter the results and find out what makes people tick in your local area by utilizing your device’s Location Services.

Pros and Cons

Pros

• Search from a database of more than 700,000 song lyrics

• See if bands and artists are currently on tour and view their tour dates
• Sync up song lyrics with your audio tracks so that you can sing along

Cons

• Song ID feature seems a little temperamental and did crash the app twice; however, I was pleased to see the option to send a crash report upon reopening the app

Final Words

I have been a little disappointed by the Song ID feature which seems a little hit and miss, but to have that feature included in the app for free is very generous of the developer.

I should also note that the app did crash on me a couple of times, although upon restarting the app I was presented with the option to send an error report to the developer. I don’t recall ever seeing this in an app before so this is very impressive and clearly shows that the developer has put a lot of time and thought into MetroLyrics.

This is basically the premier lyrics app in the App Store so what more can I say other than, well, go get it!
