Guitar Tuner app review: tune your guitar to a variety of standard and exotic tunings 2021

Reviews

Introduction

This is a great dual-purpose guitar app which serves as a simple tool you can use to tune up your guitar, while also containing a collection of different tunings, including some more foreign and unusual tunings that will enable you to branch out into new areas and explore new and exciting musical styles.

The best instrument tuners for iPhone

I’m definitely going to be keeping this iPhone app for guitar tuning for a while because there are some absolutely gorgeous tunings in here, including a couple of my personal favorites such as Open A and D Modal, also known as DADGAD.

The standard tuning functionality is right on-point so even if you only play in standard tuning, Guitar Tuner will be more than sufficient for all your tuning needs!

Tune 'er Up!

The interface in this app is incredibly easy to use and is set to standard tuning by default, which is EBEAbBE.

You can tap the individual letters at the bottom to play each note through your iPhone speakers or earphones to tune your guitar accordingly, and if you want to, tap the Play All button at the top that will play each string automatically in sequence so your hands will be free to pluck each string on your instrument.

One minor complaint I have regarding the Play All button is that once you hit it, you can’t stop it, so you just have to let all six notes play through. I find this very annoying, especially if you’re anything like me and hit that button accidentally!

No Bum Notes Here

Aside from that one minor hiccup, Guitar Tuner is an awesome app for any guitarist, beginner or advanced.

If you tap the cog icon at the top left-hand corner of the screen you’ll be able to choose from various different tunings, including Open tunings, Half or Whole Step Down, Drop tunings, and a very interesting one by the name of New Standard, which has an almost Oriental feel to it.

I’d definitely recommend putting your guitar in some more unusual tunings every so often because you’ll be amazed at how quickly you’ll start adapting to the new fingering positions and how easily you’ll be able to come up with some, for want of a better word, delicious sounds!

Final Words

This app has inspired me to grab my acoustic guitar and stick in the most exotic-sounding tuning I can find to see what ideas I can come up with!

In particular with Open tunings, sometimes you can make some amazing chord progressions simply with one or two fingers, and this is a great way of learning to step out of your comfort zone and not only enhance your creative capacity, but to also work on your finger dexterity as you adapt to new finger positions.

This is an awesome app so be sure to check it out!
