RT News (Russia Today) app review: an alternative news reader from a non-mainstream point of view

Introduction

We have all heard stories about how certain media outlets twist a story in a way that it sounds better for their political or religious beliefs. Most of the mainstream news outlets have certain deals in place with advertisers or political parties, and the last thing they want is to lose their alliance with these parties. Luckily for people who want to read news from another perspective (be it exactly the opposite, or actually true news) there is RT News (Russia Today). This app is developed by RT Web Team and promises to supply you the daily news from a perspective you will not see in the mainstream news.

What Kind of News to Expect

If you’re looking for entertainment or sports news, you can easily skip over this app. RT News (Russia Today) simply covers any news about politics, current affairs,  U.S. foreign policy, business, and opinion pieces (containing all kinds of conspiracy theories and personal views on current affairs). RT was formerly known as Russia Today and is one of the most popular foreign news networks in the United States and the United Kingdom. The channel praises itself for being free of any political and commercial influence.

What this app does is give you unbiased and objective news from all over the world.

 

News and More? What about More?

I have been digging through the options of this app, and struggle to find the “more” mentioned in the name of the app. The only functionality I can add is the edit button for the “My Feeds” home screen, and the option to bookmark certain articles. As with most other news apps, you can share stories as well, but this is only possible via email or Twitter. Facebook is missing in this list, and I believe that would be a great addition both for the app and the users alike.

One glaringly missing feature is the option to save articles to an offline reader on your device, which would be very welcome. Most articles come with a photo of some sort, but others are just plain text. I guess the news is the most important, and the more is just for show.

If you are looking for an unbiased and objective news service that focuses on everything that actually matters in this world, RT News (Russia Today) is the app for you. Even though the “More” is largely absent, I can still recommend this app to anyone who wants to create their own opinion about current affairs. The app seems rather U.S.-focused, though there is news from other countries as well. The app is designed for both iPad and iPhone, and is the smallest app I’ve ever seen, measuring in around 0.3 MB.
