SkyDrive App Takes a Swing at Google Docs But Misses
As an avid and loyal fan of Google Docs I decided to try SkyDrive, Microsoft’s slightly less successful version a cloud service that allows you to access stored files from anywhere with access to a web browser. Customers must already have a SkyDrive account in order to use the app and those that use Windows Hotmail, Windows Messenger, or XBOX Live will most likely have one set up. For the rest of us who don’t, you will need to make yourself a new account.

Simplicity might be an overstatement when reviewing the design and features of SkyDrive. There are four available options at the bottom of the screen for the user to explore: Files, Recent, Share, and Settings. When a user clicks on ‘Files’ three folders appear: Documents, Pictures, and Public. Below the title of each folder there is a display showing how many items are in the folder, the date, time, and who has access to those files.
You can upload files from your computer to be viewed or shared on your SkyDrive app or you can upload files and pictures that are currently stored on your phone. Files that are uploaded can be shared via email with another person or downloaded to your iOS device. The ‘Recent’ and ‘Share’ options show the user any recent activity that has occurred and any files that are currently being shared with them. The ‘Settings’ options doesn’t include really anything other than an option to change the email address attached to the account.
The app does what it is suppose to with absolutely no bells and whistles. Hopefully, for Microsoft’s sake, the app evolves quickly and in the future becomes more efficient for personal and business uses.
