Introduction

This is an interesting iPhone and iPad app that has been developed to provide you and your loved ones with the advance warning you need when an earthquake is imminent so that you can make the necessary preparations to ensure your safety.

It is entirely possible to detect the first seismic waves of an earthquake to provide some advance warning, and I think that this app could potentially provide you with at least some level of notice so that you can do what needs to be done to stay safe.

I can’t exactly say that I’ve tried using this app in the midst of an earthquake, but the Seismograph functionality seems to be based merely on the motion sensor of your device, rather than any data being provided from an independent source.

Because I don’t know very much about seismology, it’s difficult for me to comment on the efficacy of Wake up! Earthquake FREE, especially considering the results plotted on the Seismograph are based on the movement of your device.

This means that if you walk around with your iPhone in your pocket or you shake it, the graph will go crazy as if you’re experiencing an earthquake.

You can set up alarms that will either sound a siren or illuminate your device’s camera flash when certain levels of movement are detected, and there are also options for changing the level of the alarm and the Sensitivity of the Seismograph.

View Past Alerts in the History Section

The funny thing is, although this app is touted as being a Seismograph, I can imagine it serving far better as a security measure for those of you who don’t want people meddling with your iPhone or iPad.

Leaving this app running while your phone is left unattended will enable you to tell if someone has picked it up, and there is a History section which displays past alerts that have been raised, so you can easily tell if someone has attempted to use your device.

Having said this, there are other apps that are designed more specifically with this purpose in mind, so I’m afraid to say that this makes Wake up! Earthquake FREE little more than a gimmick, as far as I can tell.

• I wouldn’t like to rely on this app for my family’s safety, so I would look at this app as little more than a novelty

Final Words

Wake up! Earthquake FREE is a great iPhone and iPad app for those of you who want to pull pranks on the, shall we say, less-than-informed when it comes to seismology.

Apart from this, I don’t really see much use for this app.
