Cycle News app review: all your motorcycle news in one place

Reviews

Introduction

The App Store has a special section for magazines and other publications called the Newsstand. In the Newsstand you can find all kinds of different interactive and normal digital magazines. Before the Newsstand was introduced, most of these magazines had their own app.

Cycle News by Flyp Technologies might sound like a simple news app, but this app for iPad and iPhone actually reminds me a lot of what magazine apps were like before Newsstand got introduced. It simply allows you to download the magazines to your device or read the magazines online.

Weekly News!

Every single week he app will get a new issue uploaded, which you can either download to your device to read offline later, or read online, meaning you are dependent on your Internet connection to download and read the latest motorcycle news. Although the app’s name made me thing about bicycles, the app solely focuses on motorcycles and to be exact, it focuses on the competitive edge of motorcycling. The best thing about this app is that the magazine is free for you to read every week. There are no hidden costs or secret ad displays to make money off you; the only ads are the ones that are in actual physical magazine.

Layout and Usability

The layout of the magazine is exactly what you expect. It looks just like the physical magazine you would have to pay for when you subscribe and get it delivered at home in your mailbox. If you have read magazines on your device before, you will have no problem using this app. Simply tap on the issue you want to read and choose if you want to download the issue or read it online while you are connected to the Internet. Flipping through pages is done with a simple swipe to the left or right as you know from other apps on your device. In offline mode you don’t have to make the choice between reading offline and downloading, but you have to make sure that the issues are already downloaded to your device before going offline.

Conclusion

If you are a die-hard motorcycling fan and you love to watch the shows on dirt bikes on television, this definitely is the app for you. It’s really difficult for anyone to beat a free app with updates every week. The magazine is exactly what you would expect: it’s a simple scanned in version of the physical magazine, including the ads and any other content. No interactivity is found, but the magazine is fully compatible with both iPad and iPhone. Without downloading any content and just staying online the app requires just over 1 MB, which is really small!
