Fatality Strikes: Mortal Kombat Edition app review: the worst licensed game I have seen in a while

Reviews

Introduction

I have seen some awful games in the last year as an app reviewer, and most of these games were simply bad because of a lazy developer. Some of these games simply lack originality or paste a license (which I believe in this case isn’t even allowed) over an existing concept that doesn’t even work well with the game the developer tries to make. This is also the case with Fatality Strikes: Mortal Kombat Edition. Developer Richard Lim has yet again tried to monetize on someone else’s intellectual property but again fails to deliver a game that really makes the best use of the quality of the license. The game is designed for both iPhone and iPad and is available for free, with annoying ads popping up all the time.

Gameplay

The gameplay is the first thing where the license of the game doesn’t fit. Mortal Kombat is a fighting game, and the developer has Fatality Strikes designed as a platforming game. You simply have a button to jump and a button to shoot, and for the rest the game plays itself. It is nearly unplayable, as the graphics of the foreground are blocking the visuals of all the pits you can fall into, making this a terrible gameplay experience. You basically start with four lives and when you get hit or fall in a pit you will lose one. There are plenty of lives to pick up to increase your gameplay time, but I’m not sure if you want to.

Graphics and Use of the License

The graphics of the game are terrible. Even though the game uses the graphics from one of the most popular games in the Mortal Kombat Series, the graphics are glitchy, not well-implemented and look dated, simply because Mortal Kombat 3 was released over 10 years ago. In terms of the sound there is not much to say. It feels like the developer has simply picked an epic song for background music and that is it. I would have at least expected to see some Mortal Kombat music in the game, but even that is not here. And the worst thing is, there are none of the iconic fatalities of the title of this app included in the game.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Iconic characters
  • Free to play

Cons

  • Poor stolen graphics
  • No sound
  • Generic music

Conclusion

If you, like me, see this game, don’t download it. You will be disappointed. There are plenty of different characters to play as, but the gameplay remains boring, broken and straightforward. The sound of the game has nothing to do with Mortal Kombat, and there are no fatalities found in the game at all. The game is developed for both iPad and iPhone and is about 40 MB, which is a waste of space on any device.
