Learn & Play Languages app review - Learning a language can be fun too!

Reviews

Introduction

Learning a language can be quite a tedious task. I speak out of experience as I have learned how to speak five languages in my life, and most of them have been long-forgotten simply because I don’t keep up with them. Some of the languages in the world can be even more difficult to learn, due to the fact that the language itself doesn’t use the characters we’re all used to and love. Learn & Play Languages is an app that specializes in teaching you a new language in a playful way, but does it actually work? I will take a look at CoolForest Publishing’s app that works perfectly fine on both iPhone and iPad.

What it Offers

First of all, let me tell you which languages you can learn with this app. The available languages are Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese, Spanish, German, French, Thai, Arabic, and Portuguese. After you swipe through the initial tutorial that shows you how the app works, you can start learning the language of your choice. You can always switch among languages if you want to learn multiple ones at the same time. The app allows you to study the different categories first. You will need to do this before you start testing your knowledge in the different games you can play. When you’ve finished all the games in a category, and received a gold medal on each of the mini quizzes, you can go through to the full quiz.

App Design and Sound Quality

The app looks really nice and is very easy to use. All sentences that you want to learn are fully spoken within the app and no Internet is required to study. However, if you want to buy or upgrade the app, you will need a connection as after the free Quickstart you will have to start buying packs to continue learning. You can unlock one language, and another Quickstart for all languages for a mere $4.99, and to unlock everything in the app you will have to pay only $14.99. Unlocking a Quickstart for all languages costs only $1.99, which is ideal for people who want to speak a little bit in every language.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • A great new way to learn a language
  • Many foreign languages to pick from
  • Great sound
  • Upgrading is quite cheap

Cons

  • The games are not really fun

Conclusion

This app is the second-best language app I have seen. The only reason I would recommend this app over Duolingo is because it holds tons of Asian languages and Arabic, which doesn’t use letters like we do. The app itself is well-designed and you can use it on both iPad and iPhone. The app is just over 40MB, which is not including any upgrades you might purchase.
