Dragons of Atlantis: Heirs of the Dragon app review: fun strategy game with similarities to Sim City

Reviews

Introduction

Dragons of Atlantis: Heirs of the Dragon is an iPhone and iPad strategy game involving building your city, maintaining your dragon keep, and leveling each building. Additionally, there are some mini-games within the main building game such as flying your dragon, and building an army to protect your city.

Sim City Made Over

As a child of the '90s, I played the original Sim City way back on DOS. I enjoyed it, but have a way of finding jump-offs and connecting the different styles back to the original anyway. Dragons of Atlantis: Heirs of the Dragon uses building different types of buildings such as homes, farms, and other resources to enhance your city. Each of these can be upgraded, evolved, or enriched to help your city to grow stronger.

While you are building your city, you also build the surrounding farm land and work on other resources such as mining. This is achieved by clicking on the more zoomed out view versus the city view.

Your city is on a hill separated from the rest of the lower ward. This means that you can choose to view either the whole of your domain, or only your castle hill.

Sound Effects are Moderate

Dragons of Atlantis: Heirs of the Dragon has a nice moderate sound effect scheme. The main music is not too repetitive and is melodic. As an individual who rarely has the sound turned on because it drives me batty, this music I was able to let play while I was testing the game. This is unusual for me.

The sound effects in the game are also not too overwhelming. There is an occasional dragon sound, and a quiet hammer while you are building. There is also a ‘building finished’ sound to notify you when your current project is finished.

What I appreciate about this game as well, is that the building can either simply take time, or it can take gems. These gems can be purchased or earned, but you can completely avoid the use of them simply by being patient. This works wonderfully for me, as I tend to pop in and out of games while doing the dishes, laundry, or watching TV. If, however, you are a serious game player, you will want to do more quests for gems, or I suppose pay some money, to get the jobs done more quickly.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • No gems required, only time
  • Gems can be purchased if you are not patient
  • Music is not loud and sound effects not too frequent
  • Build your city and keep your inhabitants happy but no fail
  • Alliances to assist you with getting your quests done more quickly
  • Linked to Game Center for serious game players

Cons

  • Gems are expensive if you want to rush the game
  • Collecting the generals in the mini-card game is time consuming
  • The dragon flying game is tricky as the only control is tap-tap to keep the dragon up but if you’re patient it is rewarding

Final Thoughts

Dragons of Atlantis: Heirs of the Dragon for iPhone and iPad is a fun game with off-shoots from the original Sim City. I enjoyed playing this game, and the music was not obtrusive and annoying as the music in many games can be. With fun strategic game play, a way to advance your city, and multiple views, I will be recommending this game to anyone over 10 because there is a fair amount of reading and patience involved.
