Castle Doombad app review: an interesting twist on the defense genre

Reviews

Introduction

Castle Doombad by [adult swim] is now completely free to play, hence they renamed the iPad and iPhone game Castle Doombad: Free to Slay. There have been a few changes made in this game to make the game actually viable for a free to play model, but none of the changes have actually made the game less fun. The game itself is based around a castle where you need to protect your enslaved girl from knights who try to save her. You do this by making traps all throughout the mansion to make sure they can’t rescue the damsel in distress. This might sound easy, but it comes with a lot of different strategic options, and not all of them will work. The game weighs in at just over 90 MB.

Gameplay

As mentioned in the introduction, this game is all about making the life of the knights as hard as possible. You will have to place traps strategically, while the knight can come into the castle at different points. This is not the only issue: the traps can only be built using a resource called screams and the princess you are protecting generates these for you. You can also build extra generators to speed up your trap building. Some of the knights will also drop these screams, allowing you to build and upgrade traps faster. When you have survived an onslaught of knights, you will move on to the next, more difficult level, where more and different heroes will try and save the damsel in distress.

Graphics and Sound

As with all [adult swim] games, the graphics have a perfect cartoony look and the graphics look like you are watching one of their programs on TV. All the animations of the characters and traps are perfectly shaped and look funny, so you will always have something to smile at while you play this game. The sound is also on par with the graphics, making the presentation of this tower defense game app one of the best out there. Everything is created to make you believe you are playing as the bad guy and it really does make the game a lot better.
