Star Wars: Commander app review: the Clone Wars

Reviews

Introduction

Star Wars: Commander is blatant clone of Clash of Clans, though there is a shimmer of hope in these dark times of cloning. This is one of the first times I actually see a license like Star Wars stuck on a clone as such, and this game for iPad and iPhone by LucasArts is using the license in a very good way. As you can expect there will be a lot of base building defending and such, all using buildings, vehicles and units from this famous movie universe. At one point there has to be made a choice as you can expect. Will you fight with the Jedi or the Sith? Will you fight for the Empire or the Rebellion? The app is just under 57 MB and is only playable online.

Gameplay

At first sight this game is pretty much the same as Clash of Clans. The main difference is that there are many recognizable characters, vehicles and buildings in the game. The game starts on Tatooine, the planet where Luke Skywalker lived before he left with the Millennium Falcon to face his destiny. You will encounter loads of different famous characters throughout the game, such as Han Solo, Chewbacca and Princess Leia. You will, just like with Clash of Clans, be able to attack other player’s bases, and reap rewards for winning for your side. There are different planets you can visit too, making the game a bit more diverse in its approach. Each faction has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Graphics and Sound

The great thing of having a license to play with is the fact that there is already a ton of imagery available. The game does sport its own graphic style, but all the heroes from the movies have their likeness in the game and you will be able to recognize even the smallest details. For the sound this works the same. The fighters still sound the same as in the movies and the iconic light saber sound and the recognizable music are all there! In terms of presentation this game deserves all the credit, which is what you can expect from LucasArts.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Great graphics and sound
  • Tons of planets to explore
  • Choose a side and crush the enemy

Cons

  • In the end it’s just a Clash of Clans clone with a new coat of paint

Upgrade your power and defend the base

Conclusion

Do you like Clash of Clans? Do you like Star Wars? If you answered yes to both these questions, you will have to try this app out at least, as it combines the best of both worlds. The game looks and feels like it’s set in the Star Wars universe, but it plays like a Clash of Clans game. If this is a good thing I will leave it up to you, as I am not a huge Clash of Clans fan. The game is designed for both iPad and iPhone and is just under 57 MB.
