SwappyDots by Krisztian Kenedi is a highly addictive match 3 puzzle game with a twist. In an app category with a lot of competition it’s a good idea to try and stand out from the crowd a little bit and SwappyDots does a decent job of doing just that. In this game it’s all about the hole and how you can use that hole on the board to your advantage, unlike other games in this category where you simply swap one game piece for another. This makes for a winning combination that will leave you saying to yourself just one more game, over and over again! This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.
If you’ve grown a little tired of the match 3 style of game because they’ve all become a little predictable churning out the same basic concept with the odd cosmetic change, then SwappyDots will feel like a breath of fresh air. This game is not just another Bejeweled clone – it’s a whole new animal. There are some similarities of course, the game pieces are color coordinated, and you do swipe pieces across the board attempting to match three or more pieces in a row, but that’s where the similarities end. SwappyDots use of a hole on the board changes the game strategy significantly.
SwappyDots really is completely free – there are no coins to buy, and no levels you have to pay for to open them up. It also has a straightforward set of instructions to get you started. Unfortunately you will have to put up with some ads unless you want to pay to have them removed with an in-app purchase that will only set you back about $0.99. This app will require 85.8 MB of available space on your iOS device.
How to Play
At first glance the SwappyDots game board won’t look all that different form a lot of other match 3 games you’ve played in the past. But a closer inspection will reveal some unique characteristics. In SwappyDots there is one open spot on the board and you have to use that hole to move pieces in to place on the board – you can’t simply swap one board piece for another. It really changes the way you think about this type of game and it’s a fun challenge trying to slowly move pieces into place by moving them in and out of the hole. If you’ve ever played around with a Rubik’s Cube the strategy will feel similar.
If you can match four in a row you’ll receive bonus points and matching three black dots in a row is also worth more. There are also two different game modes to choose from: a timed mode and a step mode. In the timed mode you have 60 seconds to score as many points as possible and in the step mode you have 60 steps to achieve the same. Both types of game play have their own unique set of challenges.

If you enjoy playing match 3 style games, but you’re getting a little tired of the same old thing SwappyDots is the perfect solution. This game has the familiar match 3 theme, but with the use of a hole on the board as the focal point for moving pieces around the developer has given a unique twist on a familiar theme. This one’s definitely worth a closer look.
