Shoppylist app review: an intuitive way to create shopping lists

Reviews

Introduction

In our house shopping lists are something done at the last minute on the fly. There’s not a lot of planning or forethought that goes into them, which often leads to important items being forgotten. The problem with traditional shopping lists is that they generally get written on a piece of paper and then once you’re done with them they either get thrown out or just disappear. You can certainly use your notes app on your iOS device to create shopping lists that you can save, but chances are your shopping list will then get buried amongst other notes.

Create Perfect Shopping Lists

While there are a few other shopping list apps in the App Store, it’s one of the least competitive categories of apps you’ll find – there just aren’t that many. A shopping list app doesn’t need to be complicated – essentially you only need it to do a couple of things: allow you to add items quickly and allow you to remove items from the list once you’ve completed your purchase. That’s really all you need in one of these apps and Shoppylist covers these functions nicely.

The best shopping apps for iPad

Shoppylist has a simple and an intuitive user interface that doesn’t take a long time to become familiar with. Another great feature of this app is that it includes tutorials to help you learn some of its main functions – not that the app is hard to figure out, but the best apps always include some kind of tutorial or help section to make their users life easy. There are no limits on the amount of lists you can create so you don’t have to create one shopping list and continuously delete it to create another. This app will require 7 MB of available space on your iOS device.

How It Works

Shoppylist’s main user interface looks like a piece of lined paper with a simple search bar at the top of the page. To add an item to your shopping list you simply tap on the search bar, type in the name of your item (the app will make automatic suggestions as you type), and choose it from the available list. If your item isn’t in their database you can simply add it and this will be remembered for next time. The item will then appear in your list on one of the lines. If you wish to create a new list you can tap on the list button in the top left corner and then tap on the plus icon in the top right corner of the window that opens up. The app will then prompt you to create a name for your list. To switch back and forth between lists you simply select it from the available lists.

A cool feature of this app is that when you’ve purchased an item you can simply tap it on the list and it will move to a new section on the bottom of your list titled Bought. This makes it easy to track the items you still need and prevents clutter. If you want to edit your list you’ll find an edit button in the top right corner. Using this you can delete items from your list or make any other changes you need.
